Triumph TR-6 Cars For Sale
The Triumph TR6 hit the road in January of 1969. Based on its predecessor the TR5 (TR250 in America), but with a new body designed by the German Car Design firm Karmann. The end result was a refined British sports car. Handsome, tough and very fast.
The six-cylinder engine was a refined version of the TR5’s 2498cc motor that added proven reliability and amazing power. The UK version of the TR6 took advantage of fuel injection to boost the sports car’s performance to 150 bhp (British Horse Power). The US market got decent response from the more subdued carburetted 104 bhp version. In 1973 the UK model of the Triumph TR6 updated the camshaft and fuel injection metering to give the TR6 a smoother, more controlled ride.

In 1975 the TR6 received a few cosmetic updates, most noticeably the front bumper, which now sported prominent rubber bumpers over the chrome main bumper. The TR6 might have been the first Triumph sport car to sport a detachable hard top. A smart luxury to ward of the British rains and make the sports car more drivable in the winter.
The interior of the TR6 is stylish and in keeping with the TR4, TR4a and TR5 interiors. The polished wood instrument dashboard is decidedly British in styling and offers an well placed layout of the Speedometer, Tachometer fuel and electrical gauges. The electrical gauge is handy because the car was harnessed with Lucas Electrical components and wiring. Not the most predictable, as any Triumph owner has come to experience the hard way.
The leather trimmed bucket seats are comfortable and well placed to provide maximum freedom to the shifter, steering wheel and the view of the road. The heater was quick to activate and can quickly stop the chill of a damp England morning drive.
In July 1976 the last TR6 rolled off the assembly line. After 94,619 models sported around the globe the engine of the TR6 was silenced forever. It feel victim to poor sales, union labor problems and desire for the management at Triumph to pursue something completely different- the TR7. Which would eventually drive a stake through the heart of a once great company.
The design of the TR6 is is a testament to the engineering prowess of Karmann, in that some 32 years after the last TR6 rolled off the assembly line, it still holds up against any of the sports cars it would be competing with today. Those lucky enough to own one of the remaining TR6 sports cars gets to enjoy the smiles (both envy and pleasure), from people they roar past, top down and the overdrive humming along.
